Rema Unnikrishnan, daughter born to Pachan and Bharathi, is an extraordinary athlete with an illustrious career in various sports disciplines. Their talent in sports was evident from their school days, where she competed and excelled in inter-school and district sports meets, earning the title of event champion in her respective categories.
Throughout her sporting journey, Rema Unnikrishnan showcased her excellence in multiple disciplines. She proudly represented Kerala in both Kho-Kho and Handball nationals on several occasions. She led the Kerala team in the handball nationals. In 1973, she earned a spot in the Indian Women’s Kabaddi team, a testament to their prowess in the sport. Remarkably, she achieved the runner-up position in the World Arm Wrestling Championship held in Calcutta in 1980, competing in the 85kg women’s category despite belonging to the 65kg weight class. Their exceptional performance led them to secure the third place in the World Arm Wrestling Championship in Calcutta once again in 1986. Even more astonishing was that she accomplished these feats while being a mother to two kids.
Aside from her success in various games, Rema also actively participated in track and field events at the district level, earning numerous prizes and accolades.
After retiring from competitive sports, Rema Unnikrishnan continued to make a significant impact by coaching students at the Sri Chithra Coaching school. Additionally, she, along with her husband Unnikrishnan, provided guidance and training to aspiring candidates for physical efficiency tests in the police and fire departments. Many police officers and firefighters fondly remember the invaluable assistance they received from this sports couple in getting their jobs.
Like her husband, Rema Unnikrishnan takes immense pride in her contributions to the advancement of sports in Attingal and their involvement in the development of a world-class stadium in the hometown. Their dedication and achievements in sports have left an indelible mark on the sporting community, inspiring athletes of all ages to strive for greatness.
